Women ROCK! Article index >> Jenny Kavanaugh - I've Done My Time Monday morning meetings, traffic, long lines at the post office and even longer at the bank, my day was stressed. When I finally arrived home, I found my mailbox stuffed with the usual mail and one plain brown package. In the package, a CD - Jenny Kavanaugh's, I've Done My Time. Thinking about what the rest of my day would hold, I popped it in for a listen. As the first track played, I felt myself relax. Jenny's voice is like that, comforting, like coming home, as she invites you into her songs experiences. This CD contains a nice mix of rock, blues, country/folk and bluegrass. All songs were written by Jenny Kavanaugh except "Wish You'd Come Back Home" written by John O'Conner Kavanaugh. Jenny also collaborates on a few tunes with John and Thomas Patrick. On "The River", a song about finding absolution, she writes, "You need to show her the way to the river / so you can wash away the pain / and tell her you've found the heart to forgive her / and tell her you pray, she'll ask you to stay." Jenny is a St. Louis born singer-songwriter who made her name as a featured vocalist for the Irish traditional group Irish Imports on their 1996 CD Kevauna. After performing as a soloist for several years, Jenny and her brother John formed a band in the summer of 1999, made-up mostly of St. Louis scene veterans and recorded and released her debut CD, I've Done My Time last March. The diversity of Jenny Kavanaugh's music is evidenced by the comparisons that have been made between her songs and those of many well-known artists such as; Bonnie Raitt, Sheryl Crow, Anne Murray, Gillian Welch, and Tammy Wynette. Among her influences are Lyle Lovett, John Prine, Iris Dement, Emmylou Harris, Mary Chapin-Carpenter, and the Mavericks.
