Lilith 1999

A Day at the Fair

With headliners such as Me'Shell Ndegeocello, The Pretenders, The Dixie Chicks, Sheryl Crow and of course Sarah McLachlan, how could Lilith Fair be anything but a success? The tour that started out in 1997 as a three year plan, will end this summer. This well rounded musical experience has become one of the most organized, powerful, multi-artist events of the 1990's.

The Second stage showcased such acts as; Kendall Payne, Splashdown and Midiaeval Baebes. While the Village Stage hosted the talents of; Too Cynical to Cry, Keren Deberg and Juliana Nash.

The show on this tour that CW attended was at Hershey Park Stadium in Hershey, PA (yes, the place where they make all that yummy chocolate). In the 90 degree plus heat, Me'Shell Ndegeocello opened on the main stage. She and her band groved the audience with a melodic funk sound. The Pretenders followed with an upbeat version of "Middle of the Road" and Chrissie Hynde wailed on the harmonica. The Dixie Chicks got the crowd to their feet with "I can love you better". As the sun went down, Sheryl Crow took the stage for a high energy performance kicking it off with "Every day is a winding road" and getting some harmony vocal help from Sarah on "Are you strong enough (to be my man)". Sarah McLachlan appeared out of the darkened stage to a highly enthusiastic crowd, ethereal lights surrounding her angelic voice. Sarah was joined by all performers (except Sheryl and The Pretenders) for a finale of the Bob Dylan tune "I shall be released". Thank you Lilith Fair. We at CW hope this is not really the end...
